Description
Repurpose a 2230 (30mm), 2242 (42mm), 2260 (60mm), or 2280 (80mm) M.2 SATA SSD as an external USB 3.1 Gen 2 SSD using the M.2 SATA SSD Enclosure from StarTech to take advantage of enhanced data transfer rates of up to 10 Gb/s and streamline your workflow. With a sturdy aluminum housing, this enclosure protects the drive, while the built-in ventilation holes help ensure the drive doesn’t overheat. On the outside of this, enclosure you will find a single micro-USB 3.1 Gen 2 port, and the included micro-USB to USB Type-C cable, which is compatible with Thunderbolt 3, will let you begin transferring data right out of the box. This enclosure is powered by the USB bus, has an MTBF rating of 1 million hours, supports TRIM, and has a power/activity LED indicator to alert you as to when the enclosure is powered on and the drive is operating. Also included are a M.2 screw kit and screwdriver to ensure you have all of the necessary tools to install your drive.
Please be aware that StarTech’s M.2 SATA SSD Enclosure is only compatible with M.2 SATA SSDs with a SATA III 6 Gb/s, SATA II 3 Gb/s, or SATA I 1.5 Gb/s interface. It does not support M.2 NVMe or AHCI PCIe SSDs.

I purchased one of these through work so I probably wont show up as a verified buyer, but I wanted to write a review to clear up some confusion. This StarTech enclosure is only compatible with B-key SATA-based drives. The specs here at B&H dont list this detail, but the specs on the manufacturers website do. Unfortunately for Rickey, this information probably would have prevented his 1-star review. See the attached screen shot of the relevant spec. As to my actual review, the unit has a sturdy aluminum housing which both protects the M.2 drive inside, and also helps conduct heat away. The speed potential is limited by the internal SATA interface (again, this is not compatible with PCI-based M.2 drives), but thats not to say it inst plenty fast. My only (slight) concern is the ventilation holes allowing dust to accumulate inside the housing over time, but not enough to deduct a star from my review.

I bought this enclosure to clone my stock SSD to a Samsung Evo 850 M.2 1 TB SSD. Combining with the freely downloaded Samsung Data Migration that works exclusively with Samsung products, the process was flawless and easy. This enclosure was perfect for the job. It’s got a solid metal build, vents for cooling, and a connection that works with USB 3.1 or even 3.0 if you don’t have 3.1. I turned the previous M.2 I had into a mini-portable external drive, with ridiculous transfer speeds like at about 300MB/sec. Oh, and here is an LED light on the bottom that indicates it is being used! This is a great enclosure. =

Be prepared to do some fiddling around. It does work which is why it’s worth paying for the ST brand, and I would again, but this particular product really isn’t any better from a mechanical standpoint than products selling at half its price or less.. The Phillips head screwdriver included doesn’t mate well with the screw head (there are different types) and the screw is torqued so tight to a nut that you will also need a wrench, socket or pair of pliers and a higher grade steel on a screw driver to release it. Once you solve that, the screw/nut combination isn’t really quite long enough to secure the SSD properly. It will work but you will only get a turn or two on the nut so might want to put some lock-nut or a dab of nail polish on it.. Mechanically it is very poorly thought out. A rubber post with retainer would have cost a fraction of a cent more, reduced the tinker time to almost nothing and have provided long term reliability. Mechanically it is a 1 or 2 star product, functionally, like most ST products is works well and as described. – 5 star.
