Because of some other programs, I had to update to MacOS Monterey (12) but now I can’t access the device.

I am using WD since they came out to the market… Many years. You could use your own setting and manage the device with the great Smartware software tool. That is all belong to the past.. They took it all! And they did not asked us me… No more control in our hands, and the smartware software is not compatible with the new cloud. My only advise, let them change it back, or I would not buy the second new drive… I have alraedy 8 old ones…

My cousin helped me find this great deal for my mother’s christmas present. It originally said the item was out of stock so i called the customer service department and they told me exactly when it would be back and arrive at my house. I am very happy with my purchase and the help i received.

I bought this specifically to use as a network drive for time machine backup. in the documentation there’s a lot of text dedicated to it’s other abilities as a sort of home-based cloud storage solution, but not much about my intended usage, so when i hit a roadblock during the setup, the documentation didn’t have the answer. eventually i emailed the manufacturer and they responded within the hour. (if you’re interested, the roadblock was that time machine kept asking for the drive’s password, of which there was no mention in the documentation. eventually tech support told me to just log in as Guest, and it ran fine. but they could have avoided this by adding two words to the manual – “as guest”.) otherwise the product is working as advertised.

The drive works fine and it is a convenient storage and backup. The main downside is lack of instructions on how to use all features offered by this drive.

A simple NAS to backup your media. Simple and swift installation out of the box. Works fine. Though copying takes a while. You can even access it as a normal share folder on your network. Comes will apps bundle such as plex so that is work as a media center

When I was using my Intel MacBook Pro, this device worked great! I was able to connect over the network and was able to set it up as a TimeMachine backup. Now that I’ve upgraded to an M1 Max MacBook Pro, I am not able to connect over the network. I can open the website for my cloud, however, setting up the drive as a TimeMachine backup is not possible. I haven’t heard any news about a fix and I’m unfortunately stuck with this until a fix is released. I don’t recommend as there hasn’t been an update to WD Discovery for Mac since 12 August 2021 (I’m writing this review on 9 January 2022).

On my MAC this could not have been easier. It was just about a plug and play situation. I was able to use Time Machine on the computer. It was just as easy to set up the mobile app to backup my iPhone and iPad.

Beware! While the item description says Mac compatible, that became false when Apple introduced the M1 Mac devices. I bought this to go with the M1 MacBook Air that I had just bought from B&H. The install of the desktop software went fine, but Time Machine would not work. The WD app provided instructions to change privacy permissions, but that didn’t help. After fussing on and off for an afternoon, I dove into help forums only to learn that My Cloud Home is incompatible with the M1 devices like the MacBook Air (or Mini or the new iMacs). This isn’t disclosed in the item description or flagged in the WD software at installation.

The My Cloud Home has virtually NONE of the features that my old My Cloud had and were useful. There is no way to persistently share individual files, folders, or anything outside of the Family folder. There is no user management functionality to speak of. Sharing is accomplished only through URL links. I wish that I would have known these things before purchasing this device. It has been frustrating and very disappointing.

I bought this confusing product, and maybe, just maybe, it would work properly if you could figure it out, which you could maybe do if only you could get decent tech support. But dealing with tech support has been one of the worst support nightmares Ive ever experienced. Based on my own experience, (a) you will find it nearly impossible to understand them if youre not an expert understanding an Indian accent. They wont slow down when you ask them to, and they will not transfer you to an American call center nor pass you on to someone without a nearly indecipherable accent. (2) They dont seem to have anyone there who really understand a Mac. At best, theyll have to consult manuals. Or, as they once said, they have one guy who understands Mac, but hes out. (3) Youll make multiple phone calls over time, and literally spend a total of HOURS trying to resolve the simplest thing. (4) Info youre given one time will be retracted as a mistake later. (5) You cannot password protect this device; in Time Machine, you have to sign onto the device as a Guest. But this advice comes only after lots of troubleshooting that doesnt work. (6) If a thief steals your device, theyll be able to see all your data. At least thats what they told me as a correction to what they had said earlier which was the opposite. What horrible customer service, and what inept, hard to understand tech support. Buy their products and risk crying later.

I returned this My Cloud Home device. I have purchased a My Cloud EX2 Ultra as my new NAS to replace my old My Cloud device. The My Cloud EX series of devices appears to be the upgrade path for previous users of the My Cloud. The EX2 series uses a very similar version of the My Cloud OS as did the old My Cloud device, giving you full control over the device and support for Time Machine Backups. I can highly recommend the EX2 Ultra, but I cannot see any circumstance where someone would want the My Cloud Home device, unless they simply wanted a means of sharing all their information with the world at large.
